iT MAY HAVE BEEN A FREAK SEASON, BUT OUR RECORD AGAINST THE TOP 7,

we were top.

oops caps lock!

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
Since we were promoted back into the Premier League:

2012/13 10th, 46 pnts
2013/14 14th, 38 pnts
2014/15 12th, 47 pnts
2015/16 7th, 62 pnts
2016/17 11th, 45 pnts
2017/18 13th, 42 pnts
2018/19 10th, 42 pnts (7 games still to go)

If we get 2 more wins / 6 more points then Pellegrini has done better than all prior seasons with the exception of the final Boleyn season.

FREAK SEASON

scott_d 10:36 Fri Mar 22
Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
Why don't you compare us to 4 or 5 years ago and see how that fairs?

That last season at the Boleyn was a bit of a freak seasons and one of our best seasons in the Premier League so it doesn't seem fair to compare our progress with that season.

Takashi Miike 9:45 Fri Mar 22

That was in the first game. PAyet free kick.

I actually can't remember the second game.

That's football...

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
Wasn't that in the first match? Pretty sure we played poorly in the replay and couldn't cope with Fellaini in the replay

Alex G, yes but only aft e being cheated by Martin Atkinson when allowed Bastian Pigfucker to push the keeper directly in front of him

I can only explain this in the way it was explained to me when i asked as a kid in the 80’s............it’s character building.......

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
Didn't we get beaten by Man United in the FA cup that season?

Westham67 7:05 Fri Mar 22
Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
Its what we do that is why we beat Arsenal in the 1980 FA cup final when were in the second division. I don't understand how anyone doesn't understand this it been happening forever

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
We’ve always had a culture of complacency as far as I’m concerned, which means we usually up our games only against the big teams.

If we’re on a little run or we’re playing a smaller team, we immediately start looking more casual and less focused.

I’m not sure how that gets transmitted from manager to manager but there you go.

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
After Slav's brilliant first season it all went to shit. I'm not a fan of the dildo brothers but they've got it right this season and we're getting back to being close to that Slav season.

I'm a great admirer of Pelle as he's an incredibly experienced manager who, despite his age, still has ambition.

As for the dildo brothers, well, we'll see.

We're on a similar cusp as when we had so much talent with Rio and his compatriots. Push on or sell the crown jewels and become a club that struggles to stave off relegation.

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
after two seasons of penny pinching and swatting off relegation we are exactly where should expect to be given a one off cash injection.

we'll have to at least match it for another summer just to keep up with the others pushing for the coveted king of the shitters title.

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
We have 2 wins against the top six this season - hardly anything too impressive. I don't see that it's the same at all.

zico 2:16 Fri Mar 22
Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
We are pretty much in the same boat as any other mid to lower table team. It's been the same with us for years, we have a good season then don't strengthen enough for various reasons either feeling what we have is good enough, a lack of investment, going out and buying the wrong players or all the best players buggering off to play pastures new. Simple as that. The only teams to break into the Top table in recent years are Chelsea and Man City and that's only due to massive investment. The only one you could say has done it to an extent with medium investment is Spurs and it hurts to say that!!!

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
But things have changed.

We've had FOUR defeats (compared to zero) against the sides you've listed.

We peaked three years ago.

Hopefully, we are at the start of an upward trend.

Re: 3 years on - nothing has changed?
3 years ago we finished on 62 points, our highest total in Premier League history. This season we probably won't be far off our second highest total.

Better than usual results against the top teams are both a symptom and cause of these "successful" seasons but you'll probably find there were just as many (if not more) cock ups against "weaker" teams in the less successful seasons.

If we put together our best form consistently, beat the teams we could reasonably expect to AND got good results against the top 6, then we would be part of said top 6 and challenging for the Champions League or better.

This isn't the same problem, it's just the reality of our situation. Our recent history is that of a bang average mid table team Prem side that occasionally has a better than average season and more frequently has a bad one. That won't change without significant investment.
